On reverse, written in a different hand 'Captain Downe the witness is at Newport docks for a few days only. Write to W. Matthews, Dock Street, Newport and tell him what information you want. I send a spa [subpoena?] to serve on Captain Downe - if necessary you had better keep him in England or get a commissioner to examine him.'
