    (i) John, Duke of Bedford Francis Pym of Hasell Hall, esquire William Lee Antonie of Colworth, esquire (ii) Samuel Whitbread of Southill, esquire, only son of Samuel Whitbread of Bedwell Park, Hertfordshire, deceased; Jacob Whitbread of Lowdham Park, Suffolk, esquire John Wingate Jennings of Harlington, esquire (trustees for Samuel Whitbread); (iii) Joseph Barnard of Bedford, banker; recites:- will of Samuel Whitbread, 24 June 1795; "Whereas there is not as yet any public hospital or infirmary in Bedford for the relief of sick and lame objects within the town and county, like those for the counties of Northampton and Leicester, and which appear to me to be very much wanted, and are usually created by public subscription, I do bequeath to my son and 2 nephews £8000 upon trust that they place the same out at interest, and add the interest as it becomes due, and when a public hospital shall be actually agreed to, if within 7 years, to pay £4000 towards the erecting such a building; and when such hospital shall be built, pay unto the Treasurer the residue for the general uses of such hospital"; Samuel Whitbread died 11 June 1796; the principal landowners and inhabitants in September 1801 resolved to promote such a building, purchased the ground, and in December agreed with John Wing for £5,800 for the building. Samuel Whitbread junior then paid to Joseph Barnard, Treasurer, the £8,000 and interest; after applying £4,000 to the building, there remains £4,000 principal plus £1,687 interest, which the Committee of Treasury resolve to invest; witnesses.
