  • Scope and Content
Returning reports ‘I think are very satisfactory, all things considered, the sketches of the storm look as if an army had laid it waste. I do not hear of any loss of life that is one good thing, and almost marvellous that it should be so. We have just heard that Mrs Henry Chapman Marsworth [Sarah Chapman died 13 April 1916] died yesterday she had been ill a long time. She has been a good mother to them all. On Monday Minnie came for a little while Edgar had gone to Tring, she & George walked from Marsworth. She saw Annie Pratt & Mrs Pratt who is thinking of going to Marsworth to live, in a new small house, she also saw Elsie, George’s girl she says she is such a big strong girl and the boy too. Neal Pratts I should say ought to be sent away to school from all I hear and I think will be now. I am glad to say my eyes are now better, and Elsie is busy with spring cleaning, I am trying to help a little but that is not much. I can manage to tidy draws and such like. Minnie had a rather hoarse cold. I hope you found all your belongings better. One thing I let you go without your tin. I am sorry as you might want it. I am glad you came, and hope it will be possible for you to do the same again. I would love to say to Willie & Joyce, or to others come, but I feel it would not be any pleasure to them and W is of course getting handy these times. I do hope you will like your coat & skirt. Elsie went to London Wed bought a dress nearly the colour of Edith’s blue and coloured cuffs & collar really[?] it is very plain. How very busy you have been with your peach trees. I hope the frosts & birds will be kind to you. I think it is nice out door work & interesting. Edgar is undecided about his farm, but I can’t imagine him liking to leave it. George cried said he didn’t want to go away from his house but Edgar don’t want the uphill chalk land but I don’t know what he may do. Please thank Joyce and Willie for their letters which they sent to me & Grandpa. I should love to see them and hope they will have happy holidays. I expect Mr Kingston will miss his helper as he is I should say not too practical. I always think of a lot of things after you are gone that I wanted to say to you. One thing I wanted your advice about the ring, I can’t have an amethyst its not deep enough so must leave it till your next birthday or when next I see you. Best love to all from mother.
