The castle and mill were both owned originally by the de Wahull family then passing by descent to Richard Chetwood who sold to William Alston. The Alston family lived at the castle until the early 20th century when it was destroyed by fire. The later house on the site was built by Lord Luke in 1962.
The mill was in use until the 1939-45 war and was turned into a house in 1958 by Bernard Dickens.
