Card advertising the 'New Post Coach' from the Wheatsheaf in Harrold to the Red Lion in Bedford. Commenced running 5 November 1821 7. Ration book and Identuity Card. John Manton and Richard G. Manton 8. Declaration from John Manton of Manton Bros Leather Dressers that he employed Gunner George Manton before August 4 1914 and that there is employment for him on his return to civil life. Dated Dec 23 1918 9. Memorial Card for Edward Rate and note that Mr Rate, the man who first introduced leather dressing to Harrold district was buried at the Congregational Church Burial Ground in 1880. 10. Copy of press article concerning the revelation of old beams and wattle and daub plus evidence of possible use as a coaching stable and origins as far back as the 16th century during renovations to a cottage used as a warehouse by Messrs Reginald Dickens & Co, leather manufacturers. Dated October 1954 11. Letter from W. Trethewy of Silsoe to Frederick Crouch offering him the tenancy of the Blacksmith's Shop on the same terms as his uncle who had given notice to quit. Dated 5 April 1894 12. Transcript of article in Beds Times dated 20 January 1928 about Harrold Workhouse based on the finding of an agreement dated 1751 between Johnathan Quince of Dunstable, keeper of the poorhouse, and the churchwardens and overseers of Harrold. 13. Copies of newspaper articles concerning Harrold Flood May 1952 and the launch of an Appeal Fund to aid victims. 14. Copy of press article about Harrold by Caleb Le Fevre (the local butcher) in the Local Villages series. nd 15. Programme for the official opening of Harrold Council School by Robert Skinner, High Sheriff. 31st May 1937. Includes names of teaching staff, account of the new buildings and order of proceedings. 16. Certificates dated 1920 and 1921 for Herbert Osborne passing Standard 5 and 6 examinations in physiology and maths. He later became head of Balham Grammar School. Letters from Mr Osborne dated 23 December 1948 and 8 February 1949 giving recollections of his childhood in Harrold concerning village characters including Charles Robinson (a successful businessman who also held the post of honorary village constable), Joseph Robinson, William Robinson, Caleb Le Fevre, Tom Webb (the last man to be put into the stocks), Mrs Robert Pettit (the last woman to wear a crinoline), Martha Thew (who kept the Dame's School for children under 5). He also recalls that the wedding dress for the future Duchess of Devonshire was made in Harrold and that 'Old Usher' at the Toll Gate was the chief lace maker. 17. Anonymous recollections of the child of the last blacksmith. The father was born 12 April 1863 (presumably Frederick Crouch). 18. Picture and press report about Mrs Mary Martha Pratt aged 98 (born 1837). From being a young a girl she was a pillow lace maker. She married John Pratt, horsekeeper at Manor Farm. 19. Press obituary for Mr William Manton aged 48 who worked in the leather dressing industry with his brother John. August 9 1907 20. More reminiscences of Caleb Le Fevre 21. Reminiscences of Frederick Crouch, blacksmith dated 1934. Mr Crouch was correspondent for the newspaper at Harrold and an article about the Alstons at Harrold is also included. 22.
