    Comments about the writer's visit to the Isle of Wight. When passing through Salisbury on Monday, found ' all the inns decorated with laurels, bells ringing and flags flying' and a crowd by the printing office waiting for the Gazette. Hopes General Cole is doing well. Hears George Bowles and William Gunn escaped unhurt. [following action in Peninsular war] Comments about Arthur Wellesley being made Marquess of Wellington [following the Battle of Salamanca]. 'Why the other 2 marquis's are made I know not.' [Earls of Northampton and Camden were elevated to the title of Marquis]. Expresses joy on the Right Honourable Privy Counsellor's appointment; hopes it is a prepatatory step to something more lucrative [Refers to Frederick John Robinson]. Expects brother and Fanny [niece Frances] on Thursday for a few days. Writer means to go into Devonshire the 2nd week of September - it will probably be a month's tour as there are 3 visits to make. Reference to disturbances at Sheffield court [Thomas Wilson was charged with riot and assault on 2 magistrates]. Comments about the harvest. Reference to François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand's book [probably 'Itinéraire de Paris à Jérusalem', published 1811]. Recommends novel 'Things by Their Right Names' [by Frances Margaretta Jacson, published 1812]
