Scope and Content
Glad to hear from him 'You seem to have been hustling a bit in order to 'do' Paris...' Brussel planting finished, plenty of hoeing to do, flower pots came last week, also more manure. Could not find out about the cabbage from A Cope until Sunday. 'Yesterday was a heavy day at the nurseries, I think about 180 bxs toms...Theere were a lot of flowers, double whites are doing best, Margs not so well but they are fine stuff - very long stems...I have paid both Rly Cos...' Strong article in the Observer urging Govt not to restrict the offer of subsidy. Thought Hodges' idea very good. Long letter from Joyce 'mostly on the coal question. I do so want you not to get annoyed with her if you can possibly help it. I know it is difficult fo you, but I am so afraid that the only effect will be - not to change her views (which are not final) - she is far too strong minded for that - but to merely prevent her discussing such things with us at all & that is most undesirable. I still think we have every reason to be - if not proud of her, very thankful to have a daughter who has a big mind which will go on growing and I am confident - given health & strenth, will do good work in the world - possibly not just what we should like but all the same something worth doing. Forgive my sermon dear...'
