  • Scope and Content
'Thank you for your letter of this monring. I suppose the reason that I missed you last night was that I walked along by the river sintead of on the other side of the road. But perhaps it was as well that I did not see you for I could only have told you what I said in answer to your first letter. After receiving your letter last Monday I almost (or quite) decided to change my mind for I cannot bear to give pain to anyone. But after thinking about it for the past week I have come to the conclusion that it would be very wrong of me to do so for tho' I like you very much as a friend I feel - and I am sure you will agree with me in this - that something more than that is necessary. I know now that I ought to have told you this last week but I can only say how sorry I am for I feel that I have behaved very badly to you. I have on consolation however in the hope that as you have seen so little of me you will soon forget me altogether and that someday you will find someone who is more worthy of you than I am. Please do not stay away from Makado on my account...'
