    Saw the prisoner Joseph Dix at the Plough, Luton. "I told him it would be a bad job for him. He said he did not care about it; he could only go over the Herring Pond and he had rather do that than work for 3s 6d a week as folk did about Luton." Dix also said that he had bought coal from Abrahams before but hoped the lad would not suffer because he would not have thought of doing it if he, Dix, had not led him into it.
