    Letter from Thomas Cockburn to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick. Sent from Edinburgh. Wauchpole requested the papers of Sir Henry Hay Macdougal's qualification, which the writer sent. It occurs to him that Sir Henry may be expected to be prevailed with to give up his vote that another may be placed in his stead to vote for Sir John [Paterson?].

    The writer would be sorry should that be the case - 'it counts two in the reckoning, adding one against and taking one from 'your freind Hugh', and it detracts from Lord Hume's influence. Harden [Walter Scott of Harden?] is going to give the writer £300 tomorrow to be sent to Lord Hume on the present occasion, while his money is witheld, which the writer hopes will not be for long. Wauchope has promised to inform as soon as he has the cash, though the bad payments and the additional expenses of politics make them bare of cash. Reference t Lord Hume's poor financial situation.
