Letter from John Campbell, 3rd Earl Breadalbane, Lord Glenorchy to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick. Sent from Edinburgh. Writer has seen Mr Swinton, who had been applied to by both candidates, but would not engage himself to either until he knew Lord Marchmont's inclinations; a letter from Lord Marchmont has determined him to promise Sir John Paterson. [At the 1780 general election Paterson was faced by a challenge from other members of the Marchmont family and his nephew by marriage Hugh Hepburne-Scott stood against him. Scott won the seat]
