    Letter from Thomas Bland [to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick]. Sent from Berkhamsted. The writer returned to Berkhamsted on the 19th of May, tolerably well recovered from the gout, but then caught a cold and had a relapse which confined him again for a few days. Is now recovered, though weak.

    Assumes the his Lordship is returned to Wimpole and engaged in the bustle of electioneering. Mention of Mr Whittington who has just come to live at Bovingdon and has an interest in Cambridgeshire. The writer spoke to him in favour of Mr [Philip] Yorke [3rd Earl Hardwicke], and Whittington informed the writer that he has 5 or 6 votes at his command, which he has written to his steward to secure for him. When Mr Yorke is at Tyttenhanger, he may consider it worth his while to apply personally to Mr Whittington. Mr & Mrs Smyth are expected this summer [daughter and son in law], but the date is not determined. Charles Smyth cannot leave Colchester for a long period as he has 3 little churches under his care. Mention of militia to be camped at Danbury, Essex and another camp at Tiptree Heath.
