Letter from Thomas Bland [to Alexander Hume-Campbell, 1st Baron Hume of Berwick]. Sent from Colchester. Writer arrived in Colchester nearly a fortnight ago, but servant George only arrived yesterday, having been left behind sick.

Scope and Content
More pleasantly situated than in former apartments; rooms are large and free from the noise of the streets, for they look on to a pleasant garden and on to the country beyond. The [military] camp is not yet broken up and the miserable weather makes them to be pitied. Most have ‘hutted’ their tents and made their lodging more comfortable, but the horses are still exposed to the open air. Of the 5 regiments of cavalry in Colchester, only Elliot’s Light Horse was suffered to go off the ground into quarters last Saturday, and it was not until the horses began to die. Writer has ordered a barrel of oysters to be sent to his Lordship; hopes they arrive safe and good. Daughter Charlotte expects a baby ‘in due season.’ Lady Marchmont has promised to send her some necessities for the occasion.
