Brandreth House was apparently built sometime before 1815 by Thomas Gibbs, son of Robert Gibbs, gardener to Lord Ossory. It was first rated in 1812. Thomas Gibbs also worked for Lord Ossory between 1786-1791 and in 1799 was made seedsman to the Board of Agriculture. He experimented on grasses and helped to form the Horticultural Society of London. He married Sarah Brandreth, sister of Henry Brandreth of Houghton Regis. Their eldest son Thomas Brandreth Gibbs died in 1823. The second son, Humphrey changed his name to Brandreth on succeeding to his mother's family estates.
