The writer reads the newspapers in order to make herself something of a companion for her son [Joseph], who is fond of talking them over and has no one else. Granddaughter Catherine Yorke is 'one of my first objects for education - now the only daughter of my eldest son ... Her sister poor thing I spared nothing for, not will I for Catherine...'
