Scope and Content
Father had made no will since the one made on his wedding day leaving everything to his wife. Subject much in his thoughts, same problem that was before his own father HHH. The leaving of block sums had proved in his own generation to be a mistake & an intolerable burden, future of land very uncertain in view of the present tendency of legislation, taxing land rather than capital. 'Hard words about Lloyd George. Likely that future legislation will make the holding of large estates by one person intolerable, v impossible for the smaller man such as himself. that his desire was to provide equally for his sons, this with an eye to the possibility that John may some day wish to buy an estate and settle down on his own somewhere else...that possibly the best way of providing for the different members of the family would be to keep the estate as one, & earmark certain rents for different persons, whether they be more or less from year to year. e.g. as it is done he believes in the other branch of the family, certain cottages in the village being now known as 'Miss Higgins' cottages....' complete confidence that his wife would respect his wishes, very strongly felt that nothing which had come to him should go to any of wife's relations '...any tendency, such as had shown itself on occasions to make presents of 'Turvey things' to any member of the Johnson family met with his most emphatic disapproval....'
