  • Title
Letter from Mary Yorke to Lady Polwarth. The Bishop has received a letter from the lady to say she adheres to her resolution. '... we have taken more trouble about this affair than our judgements would have led us to, in compiance with the feelings of the young man, who I hope now will be fully satisfied, and for my part I am heartily glad it is over. He has been used ill in being kept so long in suspense yet I believe the young woman is more governed by other peoples opinions than her own.' [To whom this relates is unspecified].

  • Scope and Content
'As to Jacqueline [Hompesch]. she is a good girl, but I cannot consider her little disappointment sufficient to make her at present an object of compassion, while she is enjoying Lady Grey's extreme kindness and protection..... She is infinately happier in her present situation than she would have been had Lady D not died, as there was nothing she so much dreaded as living with her after Lord D's death.' [Possibly refers to Joseph Yorke, Lord Dover, who died 1792, and his wife Christiana, who died 1793]
