- Production dateFrom: 1957 To: 1977
- Scope and ContentFollowing on from the published article in the Bedfordshire Magazine, winter 1957/8 [part of AU34/19/5/2], other articles appeared in publications: (i) Shell Aviation News, number 252, June 1959: front cover shows a photograph of the Bleriot aeroplane donated by Albert Grimmer to Richard Shuttleworth being flown (not by Albert Grimmer). The story of its acquisition, restoration, flights and handing over to the Shuttleworth Collection are described in an article in the magazine entitled "M. Bleriot's Airship" and includes a photograph of Richard Shuttleworth and Albert Grimmer with the aeroplane. (ii) The Star newspaper, Tuesday 10th March 1959: an article entitled " Mr Grimmer's Early Days in the Sky". Interesting summary of Albert's Bleriot story with quotes from Albert Grimmer and Lily Grimmer, including talking about the irish linen purchased by Annie Grimmer to create 'wing bags'. [An off-cut of this linen has been retained in AU34/19/5/4.] Several flight locations in the area are mentioned including: Postern Piece, Ampthill; Holly Hedge, Flitwick; and Race Meadow at Cow Bridge, Kempston. (iii) A carbon copy of a letter by Andrew Underwood to the Bedfordshire Times dated 5th August 1977, following an accident involving the Bleriot and giving the story of Albert Grimmer's association with the aeroplane. Describes a particularly interesting encounter at Race Meadow between Albert (who had his young daughters with him) and a group of Scottish soldiers (Highland Regiments were based in Bedford during World War I), who thought that Albert and his daughters could be German spies!
