  • Scope and Content
A handwritten letter from R P S Waddy (former Rector of St Andrew's, Ampthill) on headed paper from All Hallows convent, St. Fursey, in Ditchingham, Bungay (where he has is chaplain and teacher), to Honora Grimmer: "My dear Nora, Thank you, comprehensively, for sending the Ampthill magazine, which we continue greatly to enjoy; and as a codicil, thank you for the notice about 'Home Rule for Ampthill' (what a splendid title!) which I have today ordered, as indispensable to an ex-rector. I loved the 1944 letter from George Goode (who reminded me always of Saint Nicholas himself, dispenser of hidden rations to the needy. Do you remember him reporting back on his pre-Mission visits in 1951 or 52 when all his visitees said 'Yes I'll come if you'll keep a tin of salmon for me'?) We have acquired a second grandaughter last month - Drusilla to wit, Christopher's first-born - it is a delight to have them so near. She has lots of hair, excellent lungs and a good appetite (which sounds like a school report!) Havana, Judy's redhead, is 21 months, full of intelligence and mischief, and swims like a tadpole. When I think of all the swimming lessons I needed in Sydney Harbour before I could, I turn green. I am still allowed to teach here, three forms this year and that delights me. But my hostel of 'difficult' girls gets more difficult every year. I have been trying to teach them to swear sensibly, since they only know three adjectives, but they haven't the intelligence for that yet. Otherwise Norfolk goes its placid way, sans trains, sans coal, sans oil, sans everything? A happy new year? Love from us both, Pat Stacy Waddy"
