- Scope and ContentLeft Exmouth last Monday and arrived at Sydney Farm in 3 days. One of the coach hosres had an accident, and the writer was forced to proceed with post horses. Had a weeks excursion to Plymouth; describes journey, including Teignmouth, taking a boat from Totnes to Dartmouth, view of Dartmouth. Went to Mount Edgecumbe, which the writer thought charming 'I think it is ipmossible for any place in the world to excell it.' Visited Cuthill, the old seat of Lord Edgecumbe; the writer was not impressed with the house or furniture. Stayed overnight at Ivybridge; passed through Asburton, called the ' pot de chambre' of Devonshire. Visited Ugbrook, seat of Lord Clifford 'a fine romatic place but it does not command any view of the country. The house has nothing remarkable but the fine bed worked under the direction of the late Duchess of Norfolk, and saved in part from the fire at Wirksops...what remians is singluarly fine, and in my opinion greatly excells he Majesty's at Windsor.' Also visited Mamhead, seat of the Earl of Lisburne - 'if I had not seen Mount Edgecumbe I should have set it down in my tablets as the Chef D'Ovre of nature.' Daughter Caroline is perfectly well in every respect. On return home found new buildings much advanced and hopes to have two comfortable rooms to sit in by Christmas. Whereabouts of sons.
