- Date free text5 Feb 1820
- Production dateFrom: 1820 To: 1820
- Scope and ContentThanks for brace of pheasants. As well as suffering from rheumatism, the writers nerves have been shaken by the awful and unexpected melancholy events which have followed one another so rapidly. Fears the new sovereign [George IV] is dangerously ill. Reference to the number of Royal deaths in a short time; Princess Charlotte and her baby, [died Nov 1817] the Queen, [died Nov 1818] her fourth son [Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, died 23 Jan 1820] and then King George III [died 29 Jan 1820]. Sorry to hear about Lord Grantham's accident; hopes he is recovered. The proclamation of the accession of George IV is to be pronounced at 1 o'clock, and the consecration of the new church in Bath is to be performed by the Bishop of Gloucester, who is to preach a sermon, which has drawn immense crowds. Niece Laetitia Beauchamp is staying with the writer; she left her sister at Sidmouth, 'surprisingly mended by the fine warm air, and with sanguine hopes of her recovery.' [See L30/11/323/129 and /131].
