- TitleExamination of John Butcher of Luton, surgeon: as a special constable, received instructions at the Red Lion Inn between 4 and 5pm on 5 November for preserving the peace of the town. Between 7 and 8pm saw Richard Shane throw a squib in the town near the Red Cow. As he had directions to prevent fireworks he caught Shane by the collar and "wished him to go with me - he said he would be damned if he would go". Dawson then came up and using bad language struck him with a bludgeon. Others came and took Shane from him. Many of the mob were armed with bludgeons, stones were thrown at the special constables and some had their clothes destroyed by vitriol.
