- Scope and ContentSends letter received from Wiggins [not present]. Writer assumes the two Clay's referred to are John Clay of Dilbridge and Samuel Clay of Greenstead Hall. Edward Clay junior of Shenfield has had the allowance of 20% and Edward Clay senior (about whom the annoymous letter was written) has hitherto paid only half the old rent. From Wiggins letter, the writer concludes that the 15% which he has allowed John and Samuel Clay is less than the allowance made last year. John's new rent of £480 (advanced from £292) took effect from Michaelmas 1813. Samuel's rent of £304 was set in 1809. The writer suspects that in the 2 preceeding years these tenants would have sustained losses which no allowance would have compensated for. Wiggins reports that John Clay has laid out probably £2,000 in improvements in a period when good crops produced very little money. The writer would by disposed to give discretion to Wiggins to make allowances as he did last year. Discusses the propriety of granting new leases.
