Writer recalls a mortage from Mr Morton to the late Earl of Hardwicke. He had examined the schedule of his Lordship's personal estate and found no notice of the mortgage, so concluded it was not a satisfactory security. On looking at papers yesterday, the writer found the mortgage deeds. The mortgage is dated 30 September 1776, the mortgagor is described as John Morton of Tackley, Oxfordshire; the sum secured is £2,000 and the property secured is at Medmenham, Buckinghamshire. There is nothing to show that the debt has been discharged, so the writer considers that further enquiry is required.
