    School deposit: Mary Bassett Lower School, Leighton Buzzard

    Leighton Buzzard British Infants School opened in 1839 in Bassett Road on a site given by prominent local Quaker John Bassett. This school closed in 1933 when all the town’s infants were transferred to Beaudesert. Bassett Road Girls School opened in 1873 in Friday Street (now part of West Street). In 1933 it was organised as a Senior Girls School which became a County Secondary for girls in 1946 and named for Mary Bassett, daughter of the founder of the 1839 infants school. In 1960 the school merged with a secondary school for boys in Brooklands Drive, becoming Brooklands Secondary Modern School. The old school buildings were continued as the mixed Mary Bassett County Primary School. In 1973 the school became a lower school at comprehensive reorganisation of the county’s schools
