  • Scope and Content
It is a long time since I wrote, nothing strange in Austrailia. I dare say you have read a good deal about Australia; I don't think you have heard much good of Sydney, there has been trouble around the wharves and steamers on account of a line starting to reduce wages, it nearly caused a strike, it is a great reduction from £9-7 a month for firemen and £7-5 for sailors. You might have noticed them triying to gain the release of the Broken hill prisoners; last Wednesday night there was 20,000 people assembled at the Queen's statute to form a deputation to George Dibbs the premier of New South Wales to demand the release of the Broken hill strike leaders, they had a flag, and on one side was "We demand justice" and on the other "Arrest us". The police broke up the flag and people thought there would be a riot, there was all the police and military in readiness to fire. A few months ago I met a Shefford man, Harmer, he told me a lot about Shefford and Shillington, and that poor Dan Wilson was dead. He is working about 140 or 160 miles from Sydney on a cattle-and-sheep station. I met a Luton man; his mother is a big hat-and-straw dealer named Teal. I hope you have not been troubling about me. Is poor old Harry out of the army yet? How is poor Lizy and Sarah Ann and Charlie and the family and John and his family? I have been working on the wharfe for the New Zealand Company for a long time, we get 1s an hour; some weeks are good and some not. How is poor old Vin getting on
