Scope and Content
Don't despair about this letter, which is about going to America, and next week, if I don't go to any place better, if I get a chance, such greasy work, all my cloths would be spoiled; and then when I done the 3 months to go to America there be a few pounds more fore cloths and £6 to go and I should not be able to save much. The job I am at, drilling and do dirty work and running errands, would be a poor thing to learn for New York where his works are. It would take years to learn the trade, if I was to learn it. Uncle Tom went to Croydon about 11 today with 2 men with some machines, and after dinner there was some nice goings on. Mr Savage got the carpenter to make him a table, and Savage always takes wood home every night; 2 fellows went out drinking. I shall leave my box and all but 2 shirts and my 2nd best cloths, and I put 10s in the bank, you can draw that if I get away, I shall not miss that, the bank-book is in my box. Tell Mother to feel joyful and Sarah Ann and my sisters, for I love you dearly. Uncle Tom told you all the best wide, and I thought it was painting.
