  • Scope and Content
TO STRENGTHEN THE BACK IN METU ABORTUS. Take husks of almonds blanched; dry them in an oven leisurely till they will powder; bet them fine and take a good draught of red wine and boil them together. Then put to it the yolk of a raw egg and sugar, as you do a caudle, and let her drink it at two times. If she knows herself with child it is very good. This was tried in a woman that miscarried seven times together, yet after this had many children. AN EMPLASTER TO STRENGTHEN THE BACK AND PREVENT MISCARRIAGE. Tale of oak apples, nuts of cypress tree, berries of the myrtle, the flowers and rind of pomegranate, cupps of acorns, rhubarb and mastic, each half an ounce. Beat all to fine powder and soak it in the juice of medlars and unripe services for four days; then dry it with a soft fire, with nine ounces of oil of roses washed often in alum water, and two ounces of white wax, with as much fine orient bole as will be convenient to bring it to the substance of an emplaster. Work it well together. This emplaster is very astringent and will greatly strengthen the retentive faculty of the reins of the back and kidneys being applied outwardly thereto. AD SPLENEM. Take the inner bark of the root of a young ash cut into slices the length of a man's finger 6 good handfuls. Of the rind of ivy 4 handfuls, of the yellow roots of docks picked and bruised 3 handfuls, and as much of the root of polypody of the oak newly gathered and bruised; of the kernels of ash-keys picked out of the husks 3 handfuls, of betony, balm, hartsease, tinedoder or epithimum, 2 handfuls each, of rosemary 1 handful. Boil all these very tender in as much water as will make 8 gallons of wort; put in a quantity of malt according to the strength you would have it. In the wort boil some hops of agrimony 5 handfuls, of sage 4 handfuls. Run the wort from the hops and herbs through a jelly bag leisurely that it may be cleansed. Barm it, tun it in a convenient vessel. This is to be drunk at ten or twelve days old. AD PULMONIUM VITIA. Take a calves bladder made clear with bran; put into it of brown sugar candy 1 lb., of pulegii, tussilagiis 1 handful each. anise seeds half a pound, glycyr. ras 1 handful, and tie up the bladder very close and put it in a skillet of warm water, gently boiling it till it come to a syrup. Strain it through a thin linen cloth and keep it till you have need of it. ANOTHER. Take of white sugar candy half a pound, pass.maj. incis. half a pound, anise seeds 3 ounces, glysyr 9 ounces, of blue figs 2 ounces, rad.helenii half an ounce. Wash, boil them in 3 gallons of small beer. Skim it clean and when it is cold put it up into stone bottles and so drink it morn and evening. TO DISSOLVE MASTIC. Put to it some few drops of fair water and in a mortar it will powder. AFTER HORSE-LEECHES CAUSING SMART OR SWELLING. Apply mithridate; it ceases pain and abates the swelling. FOR ANY INFLAMMATION IN OR ABOUT THE EYES. Use unguent. alb. camphoratum outwardly. IN DOLOR COLICA. Sir John Bale's case.
