Encloses two essays. One refers to the merchants trading in the East, and their decision to petition the King regarding the Turkish taxes, ‘avanias’, which have been imposed upon them. The second praises recent British naval operations. Also enclosed is a copy of his letter to Hockersan, [text in French], in which he requests information regarding an adultery case, between a merchant and his wife. He asks the Academy’s impression of the inscription when they publish a new book of their memoirs, and if he [Hockersan] has access to “any manuscripts of note”. (French: translation): From: [?] To: [?] [Handwriting barely legible] Sir, My Lord is curious to have 2 or 3 of the best [word illegible] in the affair of Mr de Morangier - and of the adultery case between a merchant of which he gave no details. You can send them in your November packet. Please discover the Academy’s impression of the inscription, when they publish a new book of their ?essays. There are 2 or 3 [two words illegible] since the last. They make the public wait a little too long. Yours etc PS My Lord would like very much to know whether any manuscripts of note sometimes pass through your hands, for sale . Is there a copy of the ?essays of [two words illegible] of Voltaire.
