  • Scope and Content
Has been preparing the answers to Lord Sidmouth's party. Refers to the detention of the Baron's papers. It was not the officers of the Aliens Dept. but Lord Sidmouth who detained the Baron's property. Although sealed they were opened by Lord Sidmouth at the request of the Solicitor of the Stock Exchange. No regret that the papers were detained. Points out the enormity of the act. The warrant to arrest the Baron was at the request of the Stock Exchange, as he had expressed an intention of leaving England. The statement that the Baron desired to remain in Newgate is a lie. The Aliens Act gives no authority to search for papers. The Bank notes found on him were produced to the Grand Jury.
