Disappointment at not hearing from Saltram. Ouston/Custon [?], a young englishman who has been abroad three years and is going into Italy. Thinks he has a good fortune, his father is a clergyman and his mother a sister of Lord Courtown's, hails from Norfolk or Suffolk. Brought no letters with him therefore Grantham can do little for him. Discusses the position with respect to travellers, difficulty and inconvenience of putting them up, entertaining them etc... Two ways of going to Court, presentation and admission. Distinctions of Rank. A Person presented is visited and invited out more. This is "a compleat Chapter out of [their] Gospel.... rather it be dedicated to Clement Cottrel than to you". Find out from Mrs. Townshend who Mr. Custon/Ouston is.
