[Taken from History of Bedford Volleyball Association in The Beds Set no. 4, ref: Z1641/1/4]: The Association was born in the summer of 1975 - conceived by N. Lewis, S. Sanghera and R. Youngs. Twelve teams competed in the 1975-6 season, mainly from colleges in and around Bedford, in one division. The winner of the league was R.A.F. Chicksands who, in those early days, were far superior to any of the 'amateur' teams just starting. In the 1976-7 season the Association expanded to two divisions and introduced a K.O. cup competition. The number of teams grew to sixteen and the trophy winners were Div. 1: Bedfordshire Fire Service, Div. 2: Luton College, K.O. Cup: Bedfordshire Fire Service. 1977-8 saw more growth with the establishment of a schools league and cup competition and the entry of a Bedford based team in the men's National League Div. 4 Anglia, which they won. Div 1 champions for 77-8 were Bedford College Striders, Div. 2 champions Bedford College I, K.O. Cup winners Luton College I, schools league champions were Goldington and schools cup winners Wootton. Thus we come to the present season with eighteen senior teams playing in two divisions and a school league of eight teams. A K.O. cup plate competition has been introduced and there are now three clubs from the county playing in the National League: Bedford Men, G.N.G and Bedford College Ladies. The Association is now less centred upon college sides, catering more for open clubs, and is in a healthy position. Much hard work has been done by a few dedicated individuals but it is pleasing to see so many people playing the sport and to know that within three years Bedfordshire has developed from nothing to probably the strongest volleyball county within the Eastern Region. - R. Youngs (Chairman, B.V.A), 1978
