Scope and Content
"I am having a last minute clear up of correspondence before going up to Scotland to the Staverts, and I find I have two letters of yours unanswered, one May 22nd. and the other july 8th. And I must thank you for the Beds. Magazines you so kindly sent. I have had an extremely busy time with a succession of visitors since I returned from my winter voyage in April; some for weekends, some for day visits, and many in for meals. Fortunately, as Sydney Crouch is at Dover until term ends tomorrow, I have been able to use his flat as an overflow. But heaven knows what I should do without Mrs.MacLeod, who has come in to wash up piles of crockery and clean the place while we were out. We are fortunate, too, in having the Castle Keep Hotel next door, to go in for dinner when time did not allow cooking at home. The weather has been far from ideal, but what with trips to Canterbury, Sandwich, Dover and so on, everybody has been happy. The Bishop of Peterborough and his wife, Lady Laura Eastaugh, are taking over my flat for August. You may remember him. He was one of my brother curates at SJDK, and came to preach at a Harvest Thanksgiving in my early days at Ampthill. I also remember he came on the occasion of my first Fete at Ampthill - held in the Du Sautoy's garden, when Mrs.Furse came with the Archdeacon of S.Albans - I forget his name - he was a friend of the Richardsons and married Kathleen in London. Cyril Eastaugh became Vicar of SJDK when my Vicar Howe Browne went to Blomfontein, and married Lady Laura Palmer, daughter of Lord Selborne, in 1948. He then became Suffragan Bishop of Kensington, and two years ago was elevated to Peterborough.
You have seen I expect that Mrs.McCorq. has been very much in the press lately, with happenings at Hatfield. And her daughter Raine (Lady Dartmouth) has a daughter - so the feminine energy and charm has extended into another generation! The men don't seem to count at all!
I hope to look into Yorkshire on the way back in September. Did I tell you that Christine, the younger of my second cousins twice removed, married one Robin Norbury in Selby Abbey last year? He is the grandson of Sir Lionel Norbury, the eminent surgeon. His father was killed in the war. Sir Lionel died last January, so now Christine is Lady Norbury. (This letter seems to be full of titles.).
I hope the new deacon and his wife have settled in happily at Rectory Cottage. What is happening about the house in The Avenue?
Yours sincerely,"
