  • Scope and Content
Response to L30/15/59/2. Extremely sorry that Mr. Worsley has so much deceived him. Understood from him that he had an annual allowance from Lord Grantham which continued through F. Robinson after his death. Details of various financial transactions. History of their acquaintance. Mention of a servant of Worsley's, not a soldier, who must have cost £4 a year. A female connection he formed when Stapylton moved away can be blamed for Worsley's misconduct. He had promised to leave her etc... Discusses his debts. Creditors not impatient, general good opinion of him. Regiment returning to England in two or three years. Lieutenants in Regiments in America who would give money in exchange for the prospect of getting home, he might pay his debts with the difference, break his connection get rid of the few people living off him who have greater resources than his. Going into another Regiment will not hurt his Promotion, he is the youngest in the present one, no prospects of change at moment. Mr. Worsley's Character; popular, conduct as Officer noticed by two Commanding Officers he has served under. Colonel Dalrymple and Major Gray. Stapylton his Captain for two years, considers him diligent and attentive etc.., has a good heart and is grateful for favours received despite his great misconduct mostly owing to "a most abandoned woman". He does not game or drink.
