Grantham ill. Pain in left knee etc... Sent for Warren. Henry Pelham has visited, have poor account of Harry who was so low as to be quite 'overset' with the story of the Boy's [?] illness. Sir C. Douglas has resigned his Command due to a quarrel with and reproof by the Navy Board. Displeased one of their Officers embarrassing Jo's friends. Lord Howe told Lord Hardwicke of it and sent Lady Howe to Mrs. Yorke. Lord Howe's resolution to pass no new Lieutenants until they were needed, delaying Dick [Worsley's] progression. Grantham to press for latter when he next meets Howe. Fracas in the Coffer Room at the Opera. A man "of as turbulent a Disposition as Drummond's Antagonist" abused T. Onslow for the debt he doesn't owe. Prince called in, he in turn called Sr Leger who advised a Challenge, not accepted. H.R.H. told Wetze [sic] sometime previously that Ned Onslow was to dine with him; "who archly thanked him for the Communication without which he would have turned him downstairs". Report adds he did dine and Weltze didn't wait. Belwood and Mickle, plan of the Lordge and general sketch to the proportion sent. Expecting to hear from Jem [Worsley]. Lady G. Has bought Ralph [Worsley] a Cadet filled with tea which he will find at Cambridge. Cannot attribute his gout to London as he set out from Newby with it. Prince Salm building a fine hotel at Paris. Pavot or Poppy is all the fashion, Lady Grantham has it for the Birthday. If Grantham doesn't go will save his Coat for the second time, on that Occasion. [Later], has received his latest; not satisfied by Fritz's recovery from gout. Glad he's at Waddilove's, sends his thanks for the latter's care. Letter from Jem who is much pleased [by his Commission]. Grantham's letters from Ireland; £633, will try to save all besides price of Jem's Commission. Pitt's summons to Fritz. Enclosure for latter [not present] for amusement, send to Firbeck when he next writes. Grantham to try a Merlin's Chair [wheel chair] if he is again confined. To be kept at Newby. Hasn't seen Lady Robinson, will try as soon as he can get out, advised to stay at home by Warren. Writing to congratulate T. Pelham on his Acquisition [inheritance of Warden's farm?]. Mentions their "sympath" characterizing their Friendship etc. [Assume he means his and Pelham's]. Lady Grantham truly sorry for Fritz's confinement. The Bratts are well. Philip doesn't seem to miss his Nurse as much as expected. Can't tell which of them is the favourite in St. James' Square. All asleep when Lord Hardwicke called. Concerned no letter about the Elephant may have made Fritz fidgety. Wish Waddilove joy of his nephew's employment.
