    Received his of the 7th. Gradual recovery, finger better etc... Dr. Moysey mentioned. Hope Fritz can bear his convalescence. Return when he feels fit. Excuses for his short letters. Admits to simply forgetting to send Newspapers. Debate not very animated, motion not well supported, more ably resisted. Difficulties arising from "taking upon ourselves to order a Committee of ye H. Of C. Were not allowed, till he ["D. of R."] admitted them". Amendment to original motion. Carlisle did well, Lord Stormont very well, Chancellor excellently. Lord Shelburne's first speech cold enough. Lord Rockingham not so solemn as he has been. Duke of Grafton superficial and Lord Campbden [sic] weak and unwilling. Lord Carmarthen turned out of his Ly[?] [Lieutenancy] of the East Riding of Yorkshire in the morning, concluded his speech laughing at folly of measure, resenting the Insult etc.. Heard Lord Pembroke will also be turned out. Sir J. S[?] delegate in his proceedings, has spoken feelingly to Lady Pl [Pelham?] herself, anxious the state of his affairs should not be made public, thinks he will never marry but wishes to see her well settled. Received £150 at Coutts for Lord Chatham. Swinburne goes tomorrow has commissioned him to get Grantham and the Duke of Richmond's picture, and to relieve Cardinal Valenti's money for him. Attended Court. Visited Lady Robinson and the Millbankes. Lord Pelham and Tom at Court. Lord P. Pleased with Tom will meet him at Lady Melbourne's. A Scotsman and a Swiss have both offered [their service] for Fritz. John wants to stay his two years out with Fritz etc... Delapierre mentioned. Grantham's balance in Draper's hands on 15 December was £2320. Will page renewal of Lease, Hope, Lambert and Peter and Foote, Black etc... Should be enough in Spain to counterbalance Joyes' demand, hopes they will not close the account until Portugal's money received. Twenty or twenty give per cent will affect everything [see previous letter] if it reaches Grantham's pension it will be very severe. Nothing mentioned yesterday. Burke makes his motion on Friday [plan for Economy see L 30/15/54/172], Lord North's ideas may transpire. Duke of Chandos did not vote yesterday, he is near becoming an honourable man. Powell has quarrelled with Sir Joshua [Reynolds]. The Exeter drawing of the boy is charming but looks unfinished. Sir J. Will be angry when he hears they [G. and Fritz] have sat for Romney "for I am told he has much of Garrick's disposition with regard to promising Artists". Style and Company at "B____r" as bad as possible, Swinburne out of patience. Waddilove went to Chatham yesterday, will take away his things tomorrow. Fritz's room being organized and cleaned. Square Porter's Lodge. Tom [Pelham] likes house and intended alterations.
