    Vacancy of Cofferer. No answer to his note of yesterday, must make a personal application "forcing" an interview. Knows more of the circumstances surrounding the situation. "D" cannot be removed until provided for; the "B. of GC" would not suit him, has refused it before, it not being as good as the Dr.[?]. This makes everything less eligible, although the principal is 2500. Doesn’t think "C____e" is after it. But "Ld. B_____p and C______l" concur in not giving these places out of the Line in which they serve and will press hard, although the Cofferership is not an House of Commons place. Expects the business to be unsettled for some time etc.... Enclosing money for Fritz, half notes, other halves sent later. Has paid linnen bill. Draper in good humour. Delapierre to see the prospective new footman, will also see Fritz's man who must call himself a Swiss tho' a Frenchman. Has lived four and half years with Lord Aylesford and since with Lord and Lady Stormont. Sir Joshua [Reynolds] just returned from Belvoir where it froze in every room. Lady Pelham asked him [G.] to dine in order to attend them to the Play, but will only attend play. Stratton Street delightful etc... Mr. Genn mentioned. Lady Charlotte Villiers has sent the French song, sending it by Mr. Ascott. Everything safe in the black box except the glass to Oliver Cromwell. Black pantiles, Fritz's Lion safe. Lord Bessborough has sent a card for Fritz for Monday. 20 January 1780. Has an appointment [with Lord North] on Saturday morning [Cofferership]. Duchess of Ruthland has asked Grantham to subscribe to her box, sent thanks for his notice of the arrival of the picture and enquires after Fritz at Bath. Has also received post from Bordeaux and Ostend, wines shipped from former Port etc... Mr. Harrier [?] from Ostend and Mr. Stanley at Customs mentioned. Rocliffe [Yorkshire]; mortgage of £700 should be taken by Fritz Draper thinks. The old woman who has it wants five per cent instead of four, but first effort must be for £6000. Sir J. Chichester has sent a large basked of Barnstable apples. Hanoverian Officer visiting, knew him in Spain, saw him at the Levée. Sir Joshua [Reynolds] picture of the Queen, Grantham doesn't like "cold and formal". His Fortitude has two sad arms. He has begun a Dido more in Romney's styles than his own. Guerino's Picture of this spoils all others. 5.30 [20 January 1780].
