    Arrangements concerning horses from the Duque de Medina Sidonia. Has spoken to Morino for a passport for them etc... Packets at St. Andero; now settled, hope they will be regular and expeditious. Continue to use Calais for the common post whilst it is still open. Exchange in Grantham’s favour 48,188 Rls for £500, above 6 per cent. Don Antonio Ulloa dined. The Museum will be greatly benefit by him with stones, roots, seeds etc... He goes shortly but a correspondence will be kept up. Tertullia and a good supper last night, they stayed until 2.30 am but Grantham left them earlier. Lost three medals. Ricla's comment [in Spanish] on the Duchess of Alva's expenses at Perez Chesinaws etc.. Ricla is constant, as is Lozada, who comes after the King is retired. Venice goes on in his old way. 1 September 1778. Won six pistoles at Kauntiz'/Kaunitz last night. Company stayed till 4 am and left through the room where he sleeps. Dining today at Musquiz', tomorrow at Bournonville's, Munro and Gazola to feed him at Madrid. Don Antonio Ulloa brought the King about 50 little clay figures of Mexican country people. Hasn't brought Grantham anything. Don Felipe Castanos is dead, assumes Yranda will carry on the suit to clear his memory, he was ill used. The Princess is better. The Prince comes next week, at the Escurial presently. Pons brought the Academy books, Grantham has his, speeches better printed than written. Pozzi's book is out. Abbé Mari has Cholic. Mrs. Aislabie wrote that the Pajaretter is arrived in London. She also spoke much of Frederick. Duff and Welsh have drawn upon Mr. Chambers. The Aloqué is on its way from Malaga, bill upon Mr. Aislbaie/Aislabie for £14.15 shillings etc.... Had written to Nanny and Mr. Draper about the horses. Dined at Boumonville's with Kaunitz, had Moselle. Setting out tomorrow for Madrid. Waddilove not going. Only sending Ladaro to provide chocolate and orgeat. Glad to go without supper for a few nights etc... Queen of Portugal has approved Grantham's design [vases for silver branches of flowers]. Duke of Ancaster and Lord Holdernesse's death leave two promises of the Garter free; at least have removed to Pretenientes. 3 September [1778]. Arrived at Madrid after journey of seven and half hours. Dined at Munro's, went to the Prado. Horses; Delapierre sent to enquire about them. The Ecuyer will bring them tomorrow morning. Munro surprized at the Commission. Gibralter marbles not fit to sit in the Desert, poor shape and polish. 4 September [1778].
