- Scope and ContentDined at Kaunitz's with the Smissaerts who are now gone. Grantham's function went well. Madame Smissaert played and sung, so did Fernanunez and even Grantham. Better amused than at the Academy. The Exhibition was bade, Ceremony bad. Portugal had Turkish music in his garden last night. Princess Masserano brought to bed of a girl. Supping at Madame Bejar's. Has made an Aedian harp. Carohas had a Regiment given him. The King enquires after Frederick. 26 July 1778. Had a Coccoa[sic] Nuts at Masin's, and nearly cryed because he couldn't laugh with Frederick. 27 [July 1778]. Very happy to receive Frederick's nos. 30-33. Plans for Grantham's return, Frederick to open nomination of his successor if presed to return to Spain etc... Expecting Diego Satursday or Sunday. The marbles are arrived. Has read 'Eloise', was affected by it. Longs to hear of his trip to Coxheath. Thanks for writing out the Simile, "could I but see it acted". Longs to have Waddilove at liberty. 28 [July 1778]. Lost five medals at Kaunitz's Tertullia. Lady Pelham's letter is very kind, she says Frederick is charming etc. Frederick must not indulge his natural reserve in Town etc. The Villahermosa's have lost their child. The Queen of Portugal has been out, the King has given her large glasses and the fine inlaid marble table. 31 [July 1778].
