Scope and Content
Auctioneer R. C. Knight & Sons. The estate is described as 'of some antiquity having been owned by the Burgoyne family for over four centuries. According to tradition it was with the following quaint-rhymed title deed that John of Gaunt granted the lands of Sutton & Potton: I, John of Gaunt, Do give and do grant, Unto Roger Burgoyne, And the heirs of his loin, Both Sutton and Potton, Until the world's rotten. The Inn in the village takes the name of 'The John O'Gaunt' and on a hill in the park is the reputed site of John of Gaunt's manor.'
Comprises: an imposing medium sized mansion, five mixed farms, numerous small holdings, market garden & accommodation lands, woodland, grazing meadows, the whole of the village of Sutton including 36 cottages, school, post office and the John O'Gaunt Inn. Total 1476 acres. Includes many photographs and plan.
Note affixed 'Owing to the Military Authorities having taken over the Conservative Hall, the Sale will be in in the Memorial Hall, Biggleswade.' Annotated ' As a whole £35,500 withdrawn then declared sold. Price & purchaser not declared.'
