Ley defending his actions. Didn't continue with letters concerning the King's visit as his brother Henry Ley was nearer the scene and better informed. Didn't make his bow at Saltram or Exeter; would have been sorry for the omission if it was necessary on Lord Boringdon's account. Not there long enough to attend Levée at Exeter. It was decided that nobody meet H.M. at Saltram, no public day or Levée there, nobody who visited was admitted to the house including Duke of Richmond, Lord Howe etc... The King spoke to them on the steps. Henry Ley and Lord Courtown deemed it unnecessary for J. Ley to go. Heard that their Majesty's were infinitely pleased with Saltram etc... The King heard to say "we shall be lost" when first entering the Hall, taken not as a concern at lack of attendance but compliment to the magnificence of the place. The rest will have been heard from H. Ley and from the public papers. The Bishop [John Ross] continued firm about his Palace. Mr. Rolle was active beyond measure. People at Exeter and Plymouth disappointed at not seeing more of Royal personages. Send a line as soon as possible about venison. "Mrs Siddons at Exeter!".
