  • Scope and Content
Lord Carmarthen, as Lord Lieutenant, was to have a meeting in the East Riding on Tuesday "to strengthen the Hands of Government...". Whitehall House grounds should take precedence. But a year of planting should not be lost at Newby [Park]. Will try to learn something of Mr. White. Mr. Weddell levelling ground and laying it out towards the river, doesn't know if anyone in particular is doing it. Intending to visit Studley. No new Manifesto from Spain. Sir Stanier Porten has sent to the Archbishop ours in french in answer to french one etc... Credit should be given to Grantham's services as well as Stormont's. Bishop of Chester [Beilby Porteus] has probably sent his first Charge to his Clergy. Picture there of Archbishop by Joshua Reynolds, Waddilove doesn't like. 24 October 1779 Note: Letter last night; Lord Stormont is Secretary of State, Lord Hilsborough President, Lord Carlisle First of Trade & Lord GG remains constant with three Secretaryships. Lord Gower retires, not out of humour, promises to support Government. 25 Oct 1779.
