All but X627/92 and X627/93 are from the office of the architect S J Nicholl, 1 Caversham Road, Kentish Town, London N.W.
S J Nicholl (1826-1905) was apprenticed to J J Scholes, and completed some of Scholes' later works and churches, which were predominantly Roman Catholic. After Scholes' death in 1864, Nicholl assisted T J Willson with churches.
Among Nicholl's churches are Oldcotes, Nottinghamshire, 1869-71; Wellingborough Sacred Heart, 1885-6; restoration of the old church at Northampton Bridge Street, 1881; Bishop's House (Roman Catholic) Northampton, 1884; facade (1887) and chancel (1880) of St George (Roman Catholic) Worcester; Clitheroe cemetery chapel, 1879-80; Preston St Wilfred (Roman Catholic), Ignatius Scholes and S J Nicholl, 1879-80 a "proud and sumptuous building".
Scope and Content
The plans are generally on sheets 30" by 22", and coloured (unless it is noted otherwise) and many are in a bad condition. Most give Nicholl's name and address at 1 Caversham Road, Kentish Town, London, N.W. They are generally a 1" or ½" scale.
