  • Scope and Content
Has taken a house in Chesterfield St., direct letters there until next Midsummer. Who did Grantham think he was seeing instead of Carlisle? Was it Charles Fox? Rumoured the Ministry have lost several members, but assumes majority as great as ever by end of session. "House of Commons is & always will be House of Commons". Both Harry Conway's out of Parliament. "Lord Hertford bitch'd shamefully at Coventry". Duke of Grafton lost Bury & brought in Charles Fitzroy from Thetford in room of General Conway. Latter reputed to be gladly out of Parliament for fear of getting into scrape about America. All elections never without trouble, especially Spencer's brother's. Was to have brought in Sir R. Payne for Malmsbury [sic] but he is disqualified as long as he's Governor. He has a writ to ask him whether he means to resign his Government. Sad account of Lady Payne from some West Indian people.
