- Scope and ContentFeelings in response to letter of 21 August [above]. Return to Madrid recommended by Mr. Chamier. Was to bear Dispatches to Governor of Gibralter and Grantham. Will follow Frederick's advice to remain in England. Feelings of guilt at his current idleness. Having been allowed to return to England, and the reason for it gratified he does not want "slothful inactivity". Expresses great affection for Robinson brothers. Begs a reply to letter. Lieutenant Seaforth of the Navy brought news of Admiral Byron's arrival off New York with ten ships of the Line and a Frigate. 25 August 1778 Copy of letter from Frederick Robinson, Saltram to Thomas Shadwell. Sorry his last letter gave so much concern, was merely trying to prevent his disappointment etc... Obliged for his expressions of attachment to he and his brother.
