  • Scope and Content
Translation: My Lord, Although I do not have the honour of being known to Your Excellency, I take the liberty of sending you the letter which I received from Mr Porten, in the hope that Your Excellency might honour me with his protection on the recommendation of Lord Rochford. I send it with the reminder of my pretensions to the place which is vacant in Real de Valence. It is a position which would give me preferment and it would thus be to Your Excellency and to my Lord Rochford to whom I would be indebted for life. This employment depends to a great extent on M le Marquis de Grimaldi, therefore I beg Your Excellency to use his good offices with our Minister to enable me to obtain it. I have the honour to be with the deepest respect My Lord, Your Excellency’s very humble and very obedient servant, Rouges [On wrapper in English] 1774 Col de Rouges Barcelona 10th June Rcd 14th June Ansd 21 [In Grantham’s hand][I spoke to M Grimaldi but the place seemed to be almost engaged to another. Penow, a Captain in the Spanish Guards].
