- Date free text30 Mar 1784
- Production dateFrom: 1784 To: 1784
- Scope and ContentArrived today via Bugsden and Barnby Moor. Saw Aunt, Dolly & Jim at Grantham. Mr. Laurence canvassed the Town yesterday for himself & Fritz jointly. Fritz however must go through same ceremony tomorrow. Election on Saturday. No chance to get to Cambridge. Intends to get to Newby. Whole county in ferment, distress locally due to Mr. Duncombe & Mr. Weddel being in opposition to each other. Grantham's interest would have gone to Duncombe & Wilberforce had he not had such close connections with Weddel. Mr. Laurence is for Weddel & Foljambe & began an "injudicious & unsuccessful" canvass there for them. Believes politics of Ripon & County are for Pitt. Address seems to have been mismanaged by Addressor etc... Hopes for compromise on Friday. Duke of Newcastle returns P. Arden & Knight[?] for Aldborough, Lord Palmerston & Sir Richard Sutton for Boroughbridge - cannot understand - unless the last are to be with Ministry. Lord Galway has a white staff, hopes Grantham will have benefit of his abilities at Committee. Tom [nephew] is grown fat, little progress in speech, but understands everything. Little girl a fine child [Waddilove's?]. Will write to Belwood & Mickle. Doubts seeing former as he is common Councilman of York.
