Mr. & Mrs. Milbanke there, no children but won £5000 in Lottery. Little Mary Milbanke spoiled by parents etc... Lord Rockingham taking care of Lady Harriet Sturgeon's son, who will inherit his fortune. Bishop of Chester [Beilby Porteus] pleased with his Sallust. Waiting for Bishop of London's house in St. James' Square or Bishop of Ely's in Dover St. Mr. Wilkie returning to Spain, will send steel buttons & little girl [Theresa Parker's] picture with him. Sir Joshua pleased with children [Jack & Theresa Parker's] painting. Begins his Sunday party's to Richmond Hill. Archbishop of Canterbury has taken Lady Downing's villa at Putney next door to Mr. Dunning's. Almodobars haven't found one yet. They were at Epsom Races yesterday. Knights of the Bath Ball on 19th, no ticket yet, applied too late to Mr. Harris. Old Knights have only six, new ones sixty. Lord Antrim took last vacancy. "Irish patriot bought off by a red Ribband, if so he should take for his motto Trim & Trim again". Lord Sandwich rumoured to retire with garter after Parliament broken up. Mr. Richards who has papers for Fritz hasn't appeared. Dunlop is in America. Baird going. Lord & Lady Spencer and Duchess of Devonshire off to Spa. "Duke chooses to sleep at home alone". Dined at Mr. Parker's with Mr. Walpole, Mr. Shaftoe a clergyman, at school with Grantham, and Mr. Charles Hawkins who studies anatomy of horses too much. Assembly at Lady Macclesfields. Played whist with Mrs. Gray against M. Mouschin & M. Wedel. Latter Danish, travelling with wife. Masquerade at Festino, a few masks called at Lady Macclesfields. Dined at Spanish Embassadors; Almodobars, Lady Jane Scott, Lord Boston, Mrs. Cornwallis, Mr. Robinson, Mr. & Mrs. Li Damer, M. Anduaga, Lord Lewisham, M. Condon, Mr. & Mrs. Hampden, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Townshend, Captain Salter, Mr. & Mrs. Brudenell, Miss Robinson. Others called in on way to Ranelagh in evening. Paid tax at commerce. Saw `School for Scandal', might be called "reward of aimiable vices..." Repairs to Causeway at Whitehall stairs. New Officer's House at Somerset House making little progress towards river. Mr. J. Bastard took little boy [Jack Parker] to see Mr. Astly ride, not amused, prefers Opera. Goes regularly with his Serjeant & is also to be sent to Plymton School. Chico [horse] begins to thrive after voyage. Duke of Northumberland rumoured to be marrying Duchess of Ancaster, no truth in it. Lord Percy has gout, prevents his marriage. Sir William Draper appointed Lieutenant Governor of Minorca. Three hundred people at Mrs. Aislabie's breakfast at Hendon "prettyest...of sort ever seen". Marques de Torre much pleased at review of Horse Guards at Blackheath. Assumes Masin arrived at Granthams. Sends compliments.
