- Date free text16 Apr 1779
- Production dateFrom: 1779 To: 1779
- Scope and ContentDined at Lady Robinson's with Nanny, Lady Cunloffe, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Pelham & Mrs. Thornhill. Private party in evening, the beaux were the Bishop of Norwich & Dean of Salisbury, latter quite broke. Thence on to Mrs. Legge's. Dined at Sackville St. Again at Mr. Parker's with Mr. & Miss Heywood, Mr. & Mrs. Musters, Sir William & Lady Lemon, Mr. Justice Bulbec & Mr. Hamlyn. Mrs. Musters very handsome, Miss Heywood pretty. Whist in evening, shirked Mrs. Rock's assembly. Painted glass by Jervase, copies from pictures or prints, small pieces have appearance of reflected picture on a Camara Obscura. Two large ones after Sir Joshua's "Hope" & "Charity". Sorry for Grantham's unease about Nanny's arm. Better now. Glad when Munro is paid. Aunt Jemmy returned to Yorkshire without anyone seeing her. Grantham's travellers; Lord Chatham’s resemblance to Carlita Pignatelli. Nanny dined with him once at Lord Shelburne’s. Hugh Conway was favourite of Tom Pelham's. Death of Grantham's servant Bartholi. The promotion of the Favolista is a great step for him. Approves of Grantham's not supping or drinking tea. Obliged for dedication of Grantham's etching, best sent yet. Glad Munro pleased with news of Sir Hector's success. Prophet Bindley so called because he always called Col. Munro Sir Hector. Diego remembers red & blue cloth, hopes it will reappear sometime. Will execute commission for plated dressing plate, may be expensive if it's first of it's sort. If his guess as to who it's for is right "a Casserole will not be a useless piece of furniture" [for Portugal see next letter]. Flattered at the Princess's enquiries after him. Grantham gave travellers a "handsome & proper dinner", preferable to crowded fete at Arcos's. Supposes Conway had best view of washing of the feet etc... Portugal's Coach will be a great convenience for them but "if they are to be at the whole expence of the new one, the Embassador has the best of the bargain". Lord Abercrombie returned to Spain, wishing to join English service. Also in a deep consumption. Duchess of Gordon's initiating correspondence with Grantham implies she might take advantage of Bishop of Landaff's [Divorce] Bill. Branciforte's commission to be executed immediately. Monmourin's watch; will try to prevent it being one of loud repeats etc... Glad case arrived safely. Urn unbroken. Will find out when Spanish Embassador dispatches a Messenger. Lord Hertford just visited, very polite.
