  • Scope and Content
Comment on current political climate. Party at present runs almost unsociably high, motives are misrepresented, facts mistated & contradictory conclusions drawn by both sides etc...". Unsuccessful efforts to bring Government down. Consequences of Keppel trial not over. Fritz considers Sir Hugh Palliser's accusation scandalous & ill founded. Keppel's conduct throughout trial exemplary, however, he should not withdraw from Public Service. Has written to King to say he will not serve whilst Lord Sandwich is First Lord of Admiralty etc... No successor to Lord Suffolk yet appointed, Lords Carlisle, Hilsborough & Littleton are candidates. Rochford said to take post in meantime. Not unlikely when sessions over & Lord Sandwich has carried his questions by dint of numbers, that he'll leave his post to a less unpopular person. Answer to last propositions from Spain long awaited by Almodobar. Hopes it will hasten negotiations. If England does not accomodate matter with France, Spain says she must take a part in the war, possibility of Spanish presence in West Indies etc...[discussion of situation in relation to Fritz & Grantham's position, Fritz's possible return to Spain. His state of health. His concerns for future employment if he stays in England etc...] House of Commons; motions of Dunning's throwing blame on Admiralty for granting the Court Martial to try Keppel. Hostility to Lord Sandwich. Captain Finch has taken another great prize. French Commerce must be sick of war. If Spaniards stay out of it, may be decided by summer. Apparently no apprehension of invasion this year etc... Mr. Parker may give up Regiment, unlikely to be placed so conveniently for Saltram, this year. Needs a good successor. Carlisle first candidate.
